Do you want to be a manager?

Most companies, as they promote people, “reward” those individuals with people management responsibility.

It really is quite rare to find companies who don’t accompany a move into management without a promotion or pay rise.

But if you think about it for a moment, would it not make more sense to reward individuals with people management responsibilities based upon the fact they want to take it on, they care about people, and choose to develop others. Rather than just move people into those roles because they have been chasing a promotion.

More non-people management promotions are needed. And vice-versa, more people management “flat” moves are needed too.
