When there is hybrid or remote work occurring, managers face a very distinct challenge when it comes to communicating with their teams. They need to change their style and actions:
– Consider setting up frequent 121s: establish priorities for the week, small, tangible goals. And then follow up in a relaxed informal manner
– Try to establish clear expectations: be clear about what you and the team expect in terms of online communications. For example, do all emails need to be responded to within an hour?
– Build trust: don’t watch your team and track their online activity status. Surveillance won’t win, rather try and help support your team by explaining you are expecting certain goals and outputs and it is for them to manage how to deliver those things on time and to the expected quality
